Our organisation works with practitioners and services in the men’s behaviour change space. With more than 20 years’ experience as the peak body in Victoria, and more recently in New South Wales, we know that men will use the church and it’s teachings to qualify and legitimise their use of violence, control and abuse. Men choose to use these tools to minimise and justify their violent and abusive behaviour towards their partners and children. These men must be held to account for their misuse of power, control and abusive behaviour. We call on all religious denominations to challenge and hold men in their congregations to account. They must challenge the ideal of ‘male headship’, and speak openly to their members about family violence. We are asking religious denominations to take a greater stand on addressing family violence in their communities.
