A quickly emerging area of practice is in the field of identifying primary aggressors in cases of intimate partner violence. At No To Violence inc. Men’s Referral Service, we are piloting an assessment tool that enables our Telephone Referral Workers to drill down in conversation with alleged victims. In our experience, incidents of intimate partner violence most often sit behind a pattern of abuse. Often an alleged male victim is later found to have perpetrated intimate partner violence in the past. As reports of family violence grow, we are increasingly concerned about the misidentification of women as perpetrators of intimate partner violence. You can read more on this subject in the article, How Victoria’s family violence system fails some victims – by assuming they’re perpetrators, which was recently published on The Conversation website.
